About me
A Fulbright Scholar to both India and Malaya, I am a writer and practicing ecologist. My research on the ancient aquatic plant, papyrus, funded in part by the National Geographic Society, took me to Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, Ethiopia, and many other places in Africa where papyrus grows. My work has been discussed in Nature, and by Peter Moore on the BBC show Science Now, and in an article by Alan Cowell in the New York Times.
I give free talks to book clubs who invite me through Twitter, MySpace, Facebook or jjgaudet@aol.com. I also give a workshop related to my blog on “Papyrus and the Origin of Books” (see also www.fieldofreeds.com)

I am a trained ecologist with a Ph.D. from University of California at Berkeley and author of many scientific papers on the ecology and development of papyrus swamps. My writing has appeared in the Washington Post and local magazines, and online, American Chronicle and Buzzle.com
About blog
My blog is the result of a long journey, a journey into the unknown past and present, a journey within myself that has taken thirty years to complete. Papyrus, the subject of the blog grows in Africa in places being cleared for agriculture. Several efforts to restore and conserve papyrus swamps have begun, but it may be too little, too late. An encouraging model is the papyrus swamp reserve in the Huleh Valley on the Jordon River in Israel where in 1993 a reclamation program costing $25 million was carried out. That reclaimed part of the area of papyrus swamp previously cleared for agriculture and was the biggest environmental project ever taken on in Israel. The river’s course was to be restored, a lake would be built to replace the original Hula Lake (the Biblical "Waters of Merom"), tourist facilities would be encouraged and hopefully the local water table would rise and help alleviate local agricultural concerns. All this work was done to reverse the damage caused earlier by clearing the papyrus, and it has paid off. In recent years the reserve has blossomed, an increase in water quality and tourism has resulted producing a success story that may provide a model for the conservation of papyrus swamps elsewhere. This story will gradually be revealed on my blog, stay tuned.

Papyrus in the Mideast!

In December I'm off on a trip, a trip with a purpose, to see Papyrus in the Mideast.

Why am I doing this?

In Africa, papyrus swamps are disappearing at a fast rate. In a few places swamp restoration has begun, but more effort is needed.

Papyrus is grown and conserved in several places in the Mideast where papyrus is a money maker -- it is used to make paper for tourists and it attracts birds by the millions so it's good for tourism as well. And more recently it is being considered as a filter… Continue
